190915_From Zen Pencils (108). Why does a fire burn in some, but not in others?

"Sophie Scholl (1921-1943) was a German activist who is famous for speaking out against the Nazi regime. Scholl was a member of a protest group called The White Rose, which was formed by her brother Hans, and some of his university friends. The group mainly consisted of students in their early twenties who were fed up with the totalitarian rule of the government. The Nazis controlled every aspect of society – the media, police, military, judiciary system, communication system, all levels of education and all cultural and religious institutions. The White Rose distributed leaflets urging their fellow Germans to oppose the regime through non-violent resistance.
On 22nd February 1943, after the release of the sixth White Rose leaflet, Sophie, Hans and fellow member Christoph Probst were arrested by the Gestapo and convicted of treason. They were executed that same day by guillotine. Sophie was 21 years old.
UPDATE: The source of this quote has been disputed. It’s been sourced on Wikiquote, but on further investigation by some readers, it can’t be 100% confirmed. It could have originated from a 1991 play about Scholl written by Lillian Garrett-Groag."

TOTY 2015 is a wrap!

Thank you for attending, and congratulations to the winning professors!

In case you could attend the event, but would still like to know the winners:

- Academic Core Department:
Dr. Anya Luscombe

- Science Department:
Dr. Ir. Richard van den Doel

- Arts and Humanities Department:
Dr. David Aiken

- Social Science Department and Overall Best Teacher:
Dr. Alexei Karas

On top of that, a lot of you mentioned a special feat on your ballots, namely the amount of involvement by Dr. Dario Fazzi! Because of this, he was also invited to receive a TOTY Certificate for Most Involved Teacher!

We hope you enjoyed, and we hope to see you at next year's Teacher Of The Year Awards.

290914_A short video from The School of Life introducing Epicurus, perhaps the most famous philosopher committed to the idea of human pleasure. 220914_Chris Hedges' talk at the most recent Fighting Bob Fest is an excellent example of why Freedom of Speech must remain protected in democratic society, and why our schools and universities must continue to focus on the job of "training" citizens of virtue (=courage) who will speak out their ideas in the public arena--for such is the Cost of Freedom. From their site: "Freedom and justice are defended through education, and the exchange of ideas promotes solidarity among progressives. To this end, Fighting Bob Fest strives to provide citizens with a forum for democratic participation where frustrations with current policies can be constructively molded into calls to action."

080814_There are two reasons why plagiarism is an issue: 1) depending overly much on someone else's work does not allow the individual to discover himself by evolving fully into his own thinking; 2) using someone else's work and ideas without giving clear credit as to their origin does not allow the Audience/Teacher/etc. to assess truly the value or quality of the ideas and argument of the work that is presented.

And then she sends me a photo of philosopher and philo-junior installing DAW's new kitchen counter over the break... and I realize that the boys in this clan must be doing something right after all.

200314_What if everyone just took "their" own toys and went home... where would the Elgin Marbles live, stolen Nazi art, and most of the stuff housed in the world's museums; to which Indian tribe/s would the Americans give back New York; would Texas have to go back to Mexico, Louisiana back to the French, and the Sudetenland back to the Germans, again, before it goes back to former Czechoslovakia (does ownership transfer when a country changes names?), and then should it not go back to surviving members of the Habsburg family, and then back to the Bohemian Crown (and just where does that Crown live today?), and then we will have to busy ourselves with finding remnants of the Celtic and Boii tribes that originally settled the region?

Where do we start in this process? And where stop? It would seem that "ownership" is a tricky business, and not entirely grounded in either Justice or Just Thinking.

190314_In response to the new film, Noah, Bill Maher provides an insightful critique against reading the biblical book of Genesis literally. If we get beyond the sarcasm, the questions Maher asks about the logic of the biblical flood narrative are impossible to answer intelligently; and the way in which the Deity is profiled is indeed pathetic. How this story has been handled by the various religious communities is not a matter of faith--that old chestnut is hackneyed and unacceptable. Rather, it is about willful irrationality, which, if that is the true definition of faith, is the most dangerous of all the opiates. "This May Be Bill Maher's Most Intense Rant Against Religions – All Of Them - Yet."

130813_We've added a very junior philosopher to the Aiken clan... a 2-month old (male) Border Collie who doesn't have a name yet. Any suggestions?

According to the Wiki-gods: "The Border Collie is a herding dog breed developed in the Anglo-Scottish border region for herding livestock, especially sheep. Ranked number one in Stanley Coren's The Intelligence of Dogs and typically extremely energetic, acrobatic, smart and athletic, they frequently compete with great success in dog sports, in addition to their success in sheepdog trials, and are often cited as the most intelligent of all dogs. In January 2011, a Border Collie was reported to have learned 1,022 words, and acts consequently to human citation of those words."

This means, of course, that this little dog is probably gifted with more innate intelligence than I am, which will undoubtedly lead to no end of interesting and philosophically-laden "conversations" in the Aiken household! Poor Margaret!!
